The President of India gave assent to the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, which is aimed at regulating medical education in the country and replacement of the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new regulator (NMC).

The National Medical Commission Bill proposes a common final year MBBS exam called the National Exit Test (NEXT), which has to be cleared for seeking PG medical admission, practicing medicine and for enrollment in the State Register or the National Register. NEXT will serve as a Screening Test for Foreign Medical Graduates.

According to the Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan, the National Medical Council (NMC) would be set up in six months and the proposed NEXT would be rolled out in three years. Once the NMC is set up, it will finalize the modalities for the NEXT, which will start in three years. This clearly indicates that NEET PG conducted for admission to PG medical courses will continue for three years till NEXT starts.

NEXT, once implemented, will be applicable for admission to AIIMS, PGIMER and other medical colleges in India of National Importance set up by Acts of Parliament.
