Four new Government medical colleges are likely to be set up in the State of Karnataka for the next academic year.

A proposal for six new Government medical colleges was submitted by  the State of Karnataka following the announcement made by the Union Government regarding setting up of 75 medical colleges in the country. The Centre has given its approval in-principle for opening four medical colleges and asked the State to submit detailed final proposal.

According to the State’s Department of Medical Education, these four Government medical colleges may be set in districts like Chikkmagaluru, Chikkaballapur, Yadgir and Haveri. The two more districts proposed by the State Government, which were not approved by the Centre, are Bagalkot and Chitradurga.

According to the officials of the Medical Education Department, the Union Government has selected those States where there are no medical colleges. The two districts, Bagalkot and Chitradurga, are dropped because they already have private medical colleges.

The Karnataka State Government has started preparing final proposal for submission to the Union Government. An Expert Committee constituted by the Medical Education Department has already started visiting the four districts for inspection of facilities.
