Punjab: The Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order to provide one percent micro-reservation in MBBS and BDS in all private medical colleges and dental colleges has been stayed by the Honorable Supreme Court.

On 26th July 2019, the High Court had held one percent micro-reservation will be applicable in State quota and management quota in MBBS and BDS in all private medical colleges and dental colleges  for children /grandchildren of persons affected by terror and anti-sikh riots. The High Court also held that the reservation would be three percent instead of one percent for under sports quota in government medical colleges as notified by the government.

With the Supreme Court’s latest ruling, the MBBS and BDS aspirants are under confusion over the counselling process being conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS).

The aspirants will see a delay in the admission process, which has been on hold for more than a month due to petitions filed in the court. The next hearing is adjourned to 23 August 2019.

The State is yet to conduct the first round of counselling to fill 2,373 MBBS seats and BDS seats in eight medical colleges and 15 dental colleges respectively. On 9 August 2019, a special leave petition (SPL) was filed by the state govt. in the Supreme Court challenging the high court’s July 26 judgment.

The Principal Secretary of Medical Education and Research, DK Tiwari, said that the department is in constant touch with the apex court lawyers. According to Mr. DK Tiwari, the high court ruling has been stayed by the Supreme court but there has been no order yet. He said that the department is also in touch with the BFUHS authorities and the admission process will be completed before the deadline notified by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
